Oi Va Voi

 Oi Va Voi

   Year: 2007

Tracks: 10

London-based collective Oi Va Voi makes it punishing to personal identification number them down -- spot their euphony easily allows for such various labels as "dance," "rock," "electronica," and "world music" to be applied to them, none of these labels describes the sound of the striation to the fullest. Oi Va Voi was able to reach this through a sooner unique combination of ethnic and cultural backgrounds of its bandmembers, with each of them delivery something original to the table. Rock & roll and Jewish music, dance beats and klezmer, Eastern European horns and trip-hop sensibilities -- all these elements coexist in the music of Oi Va Voi, creating a dense and exciting unanimous that sounds like small else out there.

Oi Va Voi (which is Yiddish for "Oh, beloved God," though at certain occasions bandmembers hinted at the fact that real translation is a spot raunchier) came together in late '90s. Founding members Nik Ammar (guitars, vocals), Josh Breslaw (drums, percussion), Leo Bryant (bass), Steve Levi (clarinet, vocals), Lemez Lovas (trumpet, vocals), and Sophie Solomon (fiddle) had their backgrounds in truly divers music outfits, still this diversity didn't stop them from trying to create something of their own together. The title of their very first, self-released track record pretty lots gave forth what the dance orchestra was stressful to achieve -- it was called Digital Folklore (and had since become a valued collectors' token). Vibrant live shows played around England earned Oi Va Voi a very strong repute, and in 2002 they were nominative for BBC Radio 2 World Music Awards solely on the intensity on their performances. Soon afterward that, KT Tunstall united the band on vocals, and Oi Va Voi released their "proper" debut, Laugh Through Tears, in 2004 via Outcaste Records. The record album dexterously showcased their potentiality -- next to more than traditional, dancefloor-oriented songs like "Refugee" song by Tunstall were compositions divine by traditional music of Israel, the Balkans, and Yemen performed by a range of guest vocalists from all around the world, from Tunis to Uzbekistan.

Reviews were radiance, but soon interior problems threatened to stop the stria dead in its tracks. First, Tunstall left hand to prosecute a solo life history; then founding member Sophie Solomon followed suit. Left without a voice, Oi Va Voi began auditioning vocalists -- the bandmembers claimed that at a sure point they felt like they had listened to "every vocalist in London," with frustratingly small results. Label executives weren't happy with album gross revenue and tried and true to agitate the band in a more commercial-grade direction, which did not agree with Oi Va Voi at all. Recording of a reexamination album was further complicated by a serious sickness inside the band. Without a contract, without a isaac Merrit Singer, and down to the magnetic core of only four members (Ammar, Breslaw, Levi, and Lavoc), Oi Va Voi was hazardously close to career it quits.

In fact, they did stop all mathematical group activities for about a year, until things began to get substantially brighter in 2006. First, Oi Va Voi ground the proper singer, newcomer Alice MacLaughlin. Then they met producer Mike Spencer, c. H. Best known for his knead with such pop artists as Erasure, Kylie Minogue, and Jamiroquai nonetheless also enormously interested in traditional music. With a renewed band, rounded up by bassist Matt Jury, and a modern mark behind them, the re-energized Oi Va Voi departed to Tel Aviv to work on their side by side phonograph record. The album, recorded in both Israel and London, was issued by V2 Records in summer 2007. It was left eponymous, possibly to signal a new beginning of sorts for the banding, and power saw Oi Va Voi embracing their peculiarities and creating a swirling mix of rock music, soulful electronica, and world music influences. Upon culmination MacLaughlin chose to continue as a solo artist, so a new vocalist had to come into the fold. It was Bridgette Amofah, world Health Organization became a howling substitute for both Tunstall and MacLaughlin. Another phallus, virtuoso violinist Anna Phoebe, joined the live lineup. Now a seven-piece, Oi Va Voi went on to duty tour extensively in support of their secondment record. Their touring schedule included a number of European festivals as well as concerts in Israel, Turkey, and Russia.

Mythic unveils 'Ironclad'

James Purefoy in negotiations to star

James Purefoy is in negotiations to star in the period actioner "Ironclad," the first pic from newly minted production, financing and sales entity Mythic International Entertainment. Paul Giamatti is circling a role in the $30 million project, which is being helmed by Jonathan English ("Minotaur").

Based on a legendary story, "Ironclad" is set in 13th century England and tells the story of a formidable Knight Templar and his "Magnificent Seven" who defended historic Rochester Castle against the tyrant, King John, and his mercenary army. Purefoy would play the knight opposite Giamatti's King John.

Richard Attenborough, Pete Postlethwaite, Angus Macfadyen and Colm Meany have also joined the project, set to begin filming this fall in Europe.

Co-producing with Mythic are Zephyr Films and Picture Park. Sales veteran Glenn Kendrick Ackermann is selling the film in Cannes and has already closed multiple territories.

Mythic was launched earlier this year by U.S.-based producer Rick Benattar ("Shoot 'Em Up") and U.K. producer/attorney Andrew Curtis ("Lost in La Mancha"). Curtis, with a background in entertainment law, is doing double duty as partner and head of legal and business affairs. Ackermann is running the sales arm.

Mythic will act as a fully-fledged production company which develops and finances its projects. It also provides gap financing and is currently negotiating a substantial revolving facility with Adrian Ward of National Bank of California. Two private equity groups in London and New York provide financing for the company's slate.

Borys Kit reported from Los Angeles; Stuart Kemp reported from Cannes.

OK! can confirm that Mayer was home at the time and we are awaiting comment from the Pacific Palisades Fire Dept. No word on whether the fire is contained but fire officials are on sight helping to put it out.

[Ed. note: someone might want to tell John that his neighborhood is on fire! Just a thought.]

Foxy Brown - Brown Parts With Manager

Rapper FOXY BROWN has parted ways with her manager CHAZ WILLIAMS, accusing him of compiling her new album "without her approval" during her time in jail.

The star - real name Inga Marchand - was sent to prison in September last year (07) for violating her probation, stemming from a 2006 assault conviction for attacking two manicurists in 2004. She was released from New York's Rikers Prison last month (Apr08).

Marchand claims she had no control over the content of Brooklyn Don Diva which was compiled during her eight-month spell behind bars and is due for release next month (Jun08).

And she blames Williams for going ahead with the LP without her and has decided to terminate their working relationship. She insists she would normally have filed legal action but her recent legal woes have put her off spending any more time in court.

She tells Allhiphop.com, "I heard this CD in its entirety for the first time just days ago and was devastated. Riddled with grief over an album that was seemingly so carelessly orchestrated, I sat down with the president of Koch (records) to come to a decision on how to make the best of this situation.

"In another phase of my life and career, I would have dealt with this situation with litigation, but for the benefit of my fans and in the wake of the profound spiritual cleansing I recently underwent in prison, I made the decision to settle our creative differences amicably. My fans have waited seven years for an in-store release and deserve my very best."

Following Marchand's release from prison she was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to attacking a woman with her cellphone last year (Jul07).

New Sands film premieres at Cannes

'Hunger', the new biopic about the last weeks in the life of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last night.
The film was directed by first-time British director Steve McQueen and stars German-born and Kerry-raised actor Michael Fassbender as Sands.
Speaking to AFP about the controversy the film will provoke, Turner Prize winner McQueen said: "I'm not saying I agree or disagree with Bobby Sands, what I'm saying is I don't know. The film is about people making decisions, bad or right decisions, and the consequences of that."
'Hunger' was shown as part of the 'Un Certain Regard' competition at Cannes, a companion to the Palme d'Or award.

Stallone faced Rambo death threats

Sylvester Stallone has said he received a number of death threats while filming the new Rambo movie. Watch an exclusive clip here.
The 61-year-old star said he received threats over the Burmese troubles, which are touched on in the film.
Stallone said: "Yes, got them all the time. It's a very dangerous part of the world. A lot of people do disappear and you know they didn't want this film to be made."
He continued: "The civil wars have been going on for 60 years and no one knows about it because they pay a fortune to keep it quiet."
Twenty years have passed since Rambo last appeared on the big screen, now Stallone has revived the franchise with this fourth instalment in which Vietnam veteran John Rambo is called back into action to rescue a group of Christian Aid workers held hostage by Burmese militia.
He said: "This is the greatest action film, mainly because it's a real story. As we are speaking people are being destroyed. Hopefully we can bring awareness to this."
The 18-certificate film is said to be the bloodiest Rambo yet. Stallone said: "War is a horrifying situation. If anyone's dropped into a war zone you come back damaged the rest of your life. The film has got a responsibility; if you're going to make a war let's show it the way it is."
Asked what the secret was to his fitness regime his answer was "fish, fish, fish".
The first Rambo film, 'First Blood', was released in 1982 with sequels in 1985 and 1988. Stallone has joked previously: "I feel like I'm 20 again - but with arthritis."
"I tried to ignore the scepticism about my age and just get on with making films. The stunts in 'Rambo' were pretty hard but I still did all but one of them myself," he said.
Stallone has admitted that the last Rambo film was a "crock of crap" and says the franchise is now returning to its roots.
'Rambo' is released in Irish cinemas on Friday 22 February.
